I, like many others, waited for Shenmue 3 for 19 years. I had an interesting, potentially unique experience playing the game.

I truly hope we can get a final good shenmue game, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it either never saw the light of day or becomes another underbaked walking simulator I know this is harsh but it just makes me really worried that Yu Suzuki has lost focus by focusing on what people liked about the old games, rather than trying to make something new and good. All these things add up to it not really feeling like shenmue, just like if someone tried to initiate shenmue by making an asset flip on unreal.

They completely retconned vending machines and drinking animations where instead you just stare at a pause menu, and the interactivity of the world doesn’t feel as alive. The game is also just filled with less memorable moments, characters, activities, etc, although to be fair I did like some points in Niawou.

Even if the voice acting was decent the actual dialogue is terrible and at some points cringeworthy. Voice acting also isn’t great, and I know it never had been, but for the English version at least it feels almost like they purposefully made it corny and cheesy, which defeats the whole point of it being cheesy. Not to mention, there is almost no good way of making money in the game, you just have to grind wood or forklifting the same small route or do tedious gamble -> pawnshop grinding.

Plus the game has an awful grind with the combat and training system that just detract from the experience even more and make it monotonous. Combat is truly awful and not even a challenge. Almost nothing significant ever happens during the story of the game, and we hardly progress in the overall story. The game itself was actually pretty boring, yes even for a shenmue game. In my opinion it had interesting ideas but it was poorly executed. It just seems like the anime is where the real meat of the Shenmue story will be told from here on out. Overall, I'm happy as hell that the anime is released and hope that Shenmue 3 is re-written completely along with the inclusion of Shenmue 4 in a future season without having to wait for the game to release. So he can say more generic lines until we finally defeat him? I'm just questioning why I even want to fight Lan Di again. No new information, no enhanced insight to what he's thinking or his personality. Lan Di said a few generic lines and we fight him.

Then we finally get our long awaited confrontation with Lan Di, which was indeed epic, but ultimately it was kinda pointless. The martial artist's wisdom and lessons weren't as good either. The overwhelming majority of new allies and villains were as flat as cardboard. Ryo shows very little growth as a character especially after learning the Wude and 'Mind as Clear as a Polished Mirror' as he is back to fighting cartoon thugs after taking down giants like Don Niu and experts like Master Baihu. It just felt like Yu Suzuki fed us a filler arc where the most notable revelations center around a bridge no one knew existed before Shenmue 3 and we're constantly retold information we already learned from Shenmue 2 (Lan Di's name, Iwao training in Bailu with Sunming). The problem sets in when 'watching' Shenmue 3. I definitely had a nice time 'playing' Shenmue 3. I liked the inclusion of training, they brought back the sense of community from Shenmue 1 along with the overwhelmingly large dog-eat-dog city vibe from 2. It was a horrid Shenmue narrative experience. It was a decent Shenmue gameplay experience albeit grindy.
